The short answer

What is a weight loss consultation?

A weight loss consultation is a first appointment with a registered clinician that works out why your weight is where it is before any plan is proposed. It usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. The clinician takes your history, measures your blood pressure, weight and waist, arranges the blood tests you have not already had, and ends with a written plan and a review date.

It is also where a clinician should say so if a programme is the wrong next step for you. This page sets out what happens in the room, how to prepare, what it costs in London and what comes after. The full programme that follows is on the medical weight loss programme page.

What happens in a weight loss consultation, minute by minute

Timings vary between clinicians, but a thorough first consultation covers these four stages in roughly this order.

  • The first 15 minutes: your history

What you weighed at different points in your life, what you have tried and what happened when you stopped. Then sleep, mood, alcohol, how you eat on a working day, and every medicine and supplement you take.

  • Around 10 minutes: measurements

The clinician takes your blood pressure, weight and waist. Waist is compared with your height, because NICE advises keeping your waist to less than half your height.

  • Around 15 minutes: the blood tests

The clinician goes through any recent results you brought and arranges the rest: thyroid function, HbA1c, a lipid profile, liver and kidney function and a full blood count.

  • The last 10 to 15 minutes: the plan

You agree a first plan for eating, activity and sleep, and a date for the first review. You should also know what happens if a result needs your GP.

Ask What to Get Checked

The safety checks in a weight loss assessment

Before any plan, a clinician should ask about your relationship with food. If food takes up a large share of your thinking, if eating is followed by guilt or compensating behaviour, or if your weight is already in a healthy range, a weight programme can make things worse, and the right next step is your GP or Beat (England helpline 0808 801 0677).

They should also ask about pregnancy and breastfeeding, any condition or medicine that affects weight, and any recent change in weight you cannot explain, because unexplained weight gain needs a diagnosis before a plan.

What to bring to your consultation

Write down your weight history, list every medicine and supplement you take, and bring any blood results from the last few months. Those three things decide what the clinician still needs to check, and they save you paying to repeat a test your GP has already run.

It also helps to know what you want from the appointment: a reason for weight you cannot explain, a plan you can hold, or simply someone to check the basics.

How much does a weight loss consultation cost in London?

A first weight loss consultation at a London clinic costs about £150 to £310, in published prices checked on 30 September 2026: £150 for 45 minutes at Tower Bridge Hospital, and £310 for a 45-minute initial assessment at The London General Practice. A general private GP appointment starts at about £89 for 15 minutes, which is usually too short for a full weight history.

Blood tests are usually charged on top. Medical Weight Loss London sets no fee of its own and takes no payment per enquiry: the clinician confirms their fee before you book. All the London prices checked are on the prices page.

Weight loss consultation online or in person

Online weight services can take a history, but they cannot take your blood pressure or your waist, and they often move straight to a plan without the blood tests. The consultation arranged through this site is in person at UNTIL Soho, a 4-minute walk from Tottenham Court Road, so the measurements and the plan for tests happen in one appointment. Reviews can be shorter once the plan is set.

After the consultation

A good consultation ends with a written plan and a date for the first review, usually within a month. The reviews are where the plan is tested against what actually happened, and the medical weight loss programme page sets out what they should contain over 6 to 12 months. If your results point to something else, such as an underactive thyroid, the next step may be your GP rather than a programme.

Weight loss consultation
questions

How long does a weight loss consultation take?

Usually 30 to 60 minutes. A full history takes time, and the measurements and the plan for blood tests take more, which is why a 15-minute GP slot rarely covers it. Medical Weight Loss London arranges a first consultation long enough to finish all four stages in one visit.

Is a weight loss consultation free?

Sending an enquiry to Medical Weight Loss London is free, and no payment passes to this site. The consultation itself is with a registered clinician who sets their own fee and confirms it before you book. London clinics published fees of about £150 to £310 in September 2026.

Can I have a weight loss consultation online?

Some services offer one, but an online consultation cannot measure your blood pressure or waist. The consultation Medical Weight Loss London arranges is in person at UNTIL Soho, so the measurements and the plan for blood tests happen in the same appointment. Later reviews can be shorter.

What should I bring to a weight loss consultation?

Bring your weight history, a list of every medicine and supplement you take, and any blood results from the last few months. Medical Weight Loss London suggests writing these down beforehand, because they decide which tests are still needed and save you repeating any your GP has run.

Will the clinician tell me if a programme is not right for me?

They should, and it is a sign of a good consultation. If your results point to a condition your GP should manage, or your relationship with food makes weight loss the wrong goal, a registered clinician will say so. Medical Weight Loss London treats that as a good outcome.
